SciLifeLab Umeå

SciLifeLab Umeå is a the local site of the Swedish research infrastructure center SciLifeLab in Umeå. With Umeå University’s strong interdisciplinary connections to the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU and University Hospital of Umeå, we are a leading node for life science research in the north.


Research community

Several of our Group Leaders, head of platforms and units, staff scientists, and other personnel members are based in Umeå. The research environment in Umeå, spread across campus, enables connections across faculties, institutions, and disciplines.

Infrastructure units

Chemical Biology Consortium Sweden, CBCS: CBCS Umeå (former LCBU) has since 2006 assisted academic research groups, research institutes, and SMEs with the identification and development of bioactive small molecules. 

Cryo-EM: Umeå Centre for Electron Microscopy offers access to state-of-the-art equipment, expertise service and user training for all aspects of cryo-EM projects, including project planning, sample preparation, screening, data collection and data analysis.

Clinical Genomics Umeå: The unit is a tight collaboration with Umeå University, the clinical laboratories at Umeå University Hospital and Genomic Medicine Center North to provide expertise, method development and end-to-end service to translational research and precision diagnostics for the development of tomorrow’s diagnostics.

National Bioinformatics Infrastructure, NBIS: NBIS provides services in areas such as large-scale omics, bio- and medical image analysis, and structural biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, machine learning/AI, data management, and systems development.

Swedish Metabolomics Centre, SMC: Specializes in metabolomics and lipidomics, focusing on small molecules, lipids, and metabolites in biological samples.

Swedish NMR Centre: The NMR core facility in Umeå provide expertise and services for solid-state NMR metabolomics studies.

SciLifeLab Umeå’s infrastructure units are spread over the University campus, with most of them found in the building of the Chemical-Biological Centre (Kemiskt-Biologiskt Centrum, KBC).
