Laboratory Technician

Temporary employment

at the Department of Environmental Science, Stockholm University

The Department of Environmental Science (ACES) is one of the largest departments at the Faculty of Science, with more than 180 researchers, teachers, doctoral students and technical/administrative staff from over 30 countries. Research and teaching focuses on chemical contaminants, (eco)toxicology, atmospheric science, and biogeochemistry. SciLifeLab houses national research infrastructures and has a mission to provide cutting-edge and enabling molecular technologies to the Swedish research community.

The National Facility for Exposomics is the first SciLifeLab infrastructure unit hosted by ACES, and specifically provides a national research service in the comprehensive analysis of contaminants and small molecules in human and environmental samples by target and nontarget mass spectrometry, also called chemical exposomics.

Main responsibilities
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician to join the team and work with us at the National Facility for Exposomics, SciLifeLab, Campus Solna. The selected candidate should have experience working in a chemistry or life science laboratory, be familiar with the safe handling of chemicals and human biofluids, and have familiarity with sample preparation techniques and quality control for trace chemical analysis. You will contribute to laboratory organization, maintenance of lab equipment, sample processing following standard operating procedures, and communicate on a daily basis with Dr. Stefano Papazian (Head of Unit) and Dr. Bénilde Bonnefille (Laboratory Manager). The candidate should be able to communicate and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists in a highly dynamic lab environment. Depending on funding a prolonged need for the employment might be necessary beyond the advertised 12 months.

Key specific responsibilities include:

  • Receive, catalog and store human or environmental samples received from research users
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of laboratory procedures, manage the stocks of laboratory materials and reagents, and assist with purchasing of supplies
  • Perform sample preparation and extraction of samples following standard operating procedures (SOPs) for chemical exposomics
  • Contribute to regular inventory of equipment and chemicals standards
  • Prepare quantitative solutions of analytical standards and their mixtures
  • Perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and monitor mass-spectrometry instruments
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.

Qualification requirements
Technician positions are appointed primarily to give support in research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish bachelor degree in Chemistry, in relevant areas of molecular life sciences, or an equivalent degree from another country. The applicant is expected to have knowledge and experience in analytical chemistry, previous laboratory experience is essential. A Master and/or a PhD degree will be considered a great asset, as will previous research experience in mass spectrometry.
