Core Facilities is a university-wide Life Science research infrastructure located at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. Here you have access to some of Sweden’s most advanced techniques and analysis tools for research in eg. medicine, biomedicine and clinical studies. All our units have strong national and international profiles and are part of national research infrastructures such as SciLifeLab. The units at Core Facilities are equipped with advanced instrumentation and highly competent and specialized staff. Next to highly qualified research support, our experts also offer theoretical education and practical courses. Our infrastructure is open to all researchers from Swedish and international institutions as well as private industry.

The Bioinformatics and Data Centre (BDC) Facility, one of the units at Core Facilities, provides a wide range of statistical and bioinformatics support including specialized courses to researchers from Gothenburg University as well as other external universities.

BDC has a strong collaboration with the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in the development of new methodologies and their implementation into routine care, via Clinical Genomics Gothenburg (CGG). CGG is one of the Clinical Genomics platform nodes, part of Science for Life Science Laboratories (SciLifeLab), which was established in 2016 and has now more than 20 employees.

Duties 

As a statistician at the Bioinformatics and Data Centre, you will be providing statistical support, i.e. data analysis and consultancy of complex datasets for both clinical and research purposes. You will be implementing new methods and running established protocols in collaboration with research groups as well as with various clinical diagnostic teams, including physicians, geneticists, molecular biologists, among others.

You will be supporting several projects simultaneously, which requires high skills in project management as well as being independent in setting your day-to-day planning such as data analysis, interpretation as well as summarizing and presenting the project results to the user.

You need to be a quick learner, write your own code with ease to analyze, automate and visualize data. Teaching may also be part of your work, thus you should have an interest in big data and biology.

Qualifications 

• You must have a PhD in Mathematical Statistics or equivalent education.
• Experience in the analysis of genomic and epidemiological data as well as using machine learning techniques is required.
• You must be experienced in R and any established scripting language.
• You should demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills in English as it is required in daily work.
• You should be able to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Experience working in a research infrastructure (consultancy) is meritorious.
• Experience in teaching and developing teaching material is meritorious.
• Experience in UNIX/Linux and use of computing clusters is desirable.
• Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability, good communication and interpersonal skills.

Employment 

The employment is a substitute for 18 months, with the possibility of extension. The employment is full-time (100%) and is placed at Bioinformatics and Data Centre (BDC), Sahlgrenska Academy. Starting date as soon as agreed.
